The festive lights have come down, the Christmas jumpers are back in the cupboard, and the resolutions are written—or maybe not. It’s January, a time of fresh starts, but also of sluggish mornings and a faint longing for the cosy ease of the holidays.
January has a rhythm of its own—a jangling mix of energies. On one hand, there’s the promise of a new year and the pull of big possibilities. On the other, there’s the reality of shorter days, winter’s chill, and the remnants of holiday indulgence still in our bones (for those of us in the Northern hemisphere).
It’s the month of dissonance: we want to leap forward, but winter whispers, “Rest.” We’re ready to take off, but it still feels like hibernation season. This friction is the January Jangles—a noisy, unsettled space between where we’ve been and where we want to go.
But maybe the January jangles aren’t something to fight, they’re something to notice with curiosity and awareness.
In a world that often feels like it’s escalating into chaos, finding rhythm within the January Jangles—a noisy, unsettled mix of rest and ambition—might be the starting point for clarity. Instead of rushing to outrun the noise, what if we paused to listen? To honour both rest and the pull to take action?
Here are 3 ways to navigate the January Jangles when they show up:
Feeling stuck? => Where are you afraid, or expecting too much? Managing your expectations releases tension so that energy can flow.
Feeling overwhelmed? => Slow down. It’s okay to step back, take a breath, and even ask for help. You don’t have to carry it all alone.
Feeling confused? => Pause. Clarity doesn’t always come through action; it often emerges from stillness and contemplation.
January isn’t about perfection—it’s about beginnings, however small. The dissonance you feel isn’t a sign of failure; it’s a sign of life, movement, and growth. Let the jangles remind you that being in this messy, noisy, uncertain place is part of the process.
The world doesn’t need people fighting the January Jangles, but resourced, full-capacity human beings ready to meet the messy reality—and sometimes the very real fires—and do what is theirs to do in the Great Symphony of Life.
Here’s to meeting the jangles with awareness and creating new harmonies from the noise.
Have a great week,Amina
